Yes, I am going to be stubborn about this. SUMMER IS NOT OVER YET!!! Temperatures have cooled from the horrific triple digits in most parts of the United States to something that feels like autumn, but I assure you it is temporary. It’s a fluke. A hiccup. An anomaly. The autumnal equinox doesn’t start until September 23 for countries in the Northern Hemisphere, so for the next two weeks I’m going to party like it’s 1999!!!

The one concession in my quest to savor the last days of summer will be a move toward deeper colored flowers. A profusion of richly hued orchids (accented with Asiatic lilies on the lamps) are the star of this September/late summer tablescape.

I decided to go with relatively simple pieces down low on the table to allow the higher pieces to fully shine. Standard white full-length poly-cotton table linens are topped with braided edge gold chargers. The gold-banded white china here is from Pier 1.

Each is topped with a stem of orchids. Because my wallet is lighter than usual these days and this is a demo table, faux orchids are used here. I would, however, recommend the real deal for guests. Orchids can last for hours and hours out of water under temperate conditions.

Bright gold flatware with a barely there pattern is right in line with the simple design.

The stemware is from Godinger’s “Chelsea” collection. I tend to serve a lot of beverages before, during and after dinner, so my table is almost always loaded down with various drinking vessels. Clusters of gleaming crystal always looks great!

Crystal decanters filled with the spirit-du-jour always look pretty. These were a great buy from Tuesday Morning.

The center floral on this 12-ft. long table is a glass cylinder filled with 6-ft.H orchid stems. I arranged the stems to appear to be “raining” over the center of the table. (Click here and scroll down to “Autumn Orchids” to see another way to use these super tall orchid stems in glass cylinders!)

"Raining Orchids" -I am a big fan of bringing the indoors out for a little air. Almost everything you love inside your house will look twice as great outside! These lampshades are from our dining room where the palette is predominantly orange.

The lamp base here is constructed of a simple clear glass 31″H cylinder. (Glass cylinders can be your very best friend!! Click here and scroll down to “Love and Orchids” for another great glass cylinder & orchid combo!))

"Raining Orchids" - Tablescapes at Table Twenty-One, www.tabletwentyone.wordpress.comSuspended from the lampshade frame and “raining” into the glass cylinder are garlands of bling along with silk orchids sewn onto fishing wire. I hot glued a rhinestone to the center of each bloom to give it a little more “oomph!” and amp up the sparkle within the glass base.

"Raining Orchids" -This offers a glimpse as to how the lamp looks in pitch darkness. I used an uplight turned upside down to project light downward into the glass cylinder.   1. Alycia, this is the most dramatic outdoor scape ever, well until your next one. I love the idea of using the lamp shades on the tall cylinders. What drama you have created! I was hoping this was either a for real table or those were faux orchids.. Whew was i glad to find out they were forever ones.. It’s wonderful with the color and the outside lighting. Love the chains in the cylinders too. The simple china and flatware compliments the drama in the canopy so well. Oh gosh. so perfect.. Not everything has to be the star! Alycia it’s another fun filled, wonderful, dramatic, over the top table.. where I’d love to sit and chat till the early hours of the morning!

    • You know that coming from you….that means the world to me! I WISH I could afford to have real orchids all ’round. Once this economy straightens itself out (I hope that ain’t just wishful thinking on my part!), I will be able to go all in with the real deal again. I LOVE orchids…even if they are of the “forever” variety!!! Since May I have had to scale back, but I don’t mind at all when it turns out looking OK. Like I said before, “Go big, or go home!” That centerpiece was B-I-G, wasn’t it!!!!! 😉

  2. Alycia~ This is fabulous! Your lampshades used on your cylinders are a brilliant idea and lend a wonderful effect! I’m a big fan of bringing the indoors out & the outdoors in~ I just love your suspended orchids & crystal garlands~ Your orchids on the monogrammed napkins are the perfect touch. We have lots more summer ahead of us here, I’m ready for fall but it’s not in the cards for us until mid October as a rule, if then. As always, I enjoy seeing your creativity and what you bring to the table!

  8. You had me at orchid. This is so inspired. I love it. Especially the lampshades and lamps on the table. They pick up the colors in the orchids to perfection. I am with you…..summer is NOT over by a long shot. I’m going to wearing my flip flops and setting the light, happy tables of summer. Brown and orange are coming, for sure, but I have a couple more summer settings up my sleeve. But you, my sista from anutter mutter, you’ll thrill us with whatever you post. Keep it coming!

    • Had you at orchid, huh, my sista from anutter mutter? 😉 I LOVE orchids and would have used real ones if my budget would have allowed!!! To entertain real guests, this table would have cost me a fortune!!! Glad I could do it for fun, though. A couple of years from now, I’m going to be able to recreate this bad boy using the real thing! 🙂 Thank you for having my back on summer! I just can’t seem to let it go. I’m going to try and slowly transition…kind of like we have to do with clothes: September and early October are always kind of awkward!

  9. I’m in awe of this! My eyes went to the bling in the glass cylinders! That is the coolest ever! I love what you did with the orchids! The table is set perfectly- simple and elegant. I assume the lamp shades are laying on their own metal framing on top of the cylinders? Did you wire the pieces in the center to the lamp shades? Gee I’m nosy and curious!! Okay I’ll go to your tutorial! I’m with you on not giving up on summer yet! We still have until Sept. 23rd!!

    • Hey, Liz! OK…you’ve read the tutorial, but if you need any other questions answered about how to do this, just let me know. It was a little bit harder than I thought it would be when I first thought of it. I think because I don’t really know how to sew with a needle and thread…that made it MUCH harder for me! Knotting that end was a booger bear!!! And yes, I did just sit the shades atop the cylinder using the frame. Looking forward to seeing this on one of your future ‘scapes!!!   13. I totally agree!! I am not ready to give up summer just yet. It is still quite hot here, but a bit depressing as it’s been raining day and night for three days! What a great idea to bring the lamp shades outside on the glass cylinders!! I believe you used smaller ones before, but these look great outside. I would never have thought of that, so clever. I love using orange, such a bright, cheerful color. And you know I love bling!! I have to go back and look more closely at the details, especially the tutorial. I have bought those lights you can put in water, so I want to check out what you used. This was cleverly done and very beautiful!!

Well, Alycia … Girl … this is stunning! Drama for days (no for weeks)! I’m really loving the elegant, imaginative outdoor tables you’ve been creating and sharing the past couple of weeks!

    I’ve seen you submerging real-deal orchids in water for special events, and I have absolutely no doubt that you’ll be back to doing money-is-no-object tables in no time at all!

    The photos taken in natural light really show off your outdoor tables to great advantage. The lighted glass cylinders “raining” bling garlands and diamond (rhinestone) centered blossoms is genius! Definitely magazine worthy!

  31. Alycia, So how did you do, you ask??? I am awarding you First Prize of all the entries this week for the most creative tablescape. I learned alot from you again this week. Those “lamps” were the most creative item I have seen in quite awhile. The orchids look so real and the color is so fitting for September. I noted how you coordinated the colors on the lampshade in picking the orchid color. I am going to look for those battery powered uplights. The hanging crystals were so clever. Just stunning.     • You are making me blush! Thank you!!!!! Like many Americans right now, our money is so funny it’s laughing out loud, rollin’ on the floor and sponsoring its own stand up comic hour! 😉 I have had to dig deep to come up with creative ways to dress tables. No more big budget flowers, etc. Thank goodness I have a huge stash of faux florals that I kept from back in the day when I owned my wedding design store. I used them to create florals all around the store and to demonstrate to brides what the centerpiece items they were renting from me might look like with the real flowers the florist would use. (Some people are SO visual…I had to just straight up show ’em!) I sold a TON of those flowers, but kept enough to fill a 10’x11′ storage room! So….I can still get the look I want when I’m just playing around like this. When real guests come over, though, I HAVE to bite the bullet and go in for the real thing. While my money is so funny it’s tickling itself pink, I also have very generous florist friends from back in the day who are willing to give or lend me flowers for my tables.   32. Oh Wow! This setting is devine! I absolutely love it! I am a big fan of crystals and I love how you worked in what seems like fall colors though not necessarily. This is so versatile, I just love it. I can’t figure out if I am looking at lamps or not, they are right? This has such an elegant style to it. Excellent job!

    • Hi, Mary, and thank you! The shades came from lamps in my dining room. I simply sat them on top of glass cylinders. I attached all the little orchid blooms with fishing wire and added the bling so the glass cylinder wouldn’t look so plain. I’m glad you like it! Thank you for stopping in!!!

    The sushi was ready made from our fav store but the chinese are made fresh by me, the taste not bad as I have been cooking chinese for almost 11 years, am I good nop does its taste good well maybe a little.

  36. Oh no, Alycia, this is a mare amount of my humungus stash! I have them in awful places! carton boxes, one on top of the other, in this pretty cinabar doors, which lead to under the staircase, in the guest room, in everyplace of the living room and family room, of course the dining room and kitchen, some in my bedroom and plenty in the guest room!! In the foyer, in vintage trunks, you name it! I have to start with 14 or 15 sets of comlete china…so hon, we’re probably in the same boat! Yeah, there was a party a few months ago and it was named: WHERE DO YOU KEEP IT ALL!, and I didn’t even join, LOL!! Maybe we should just visit each other to see!! Lots of hugs, FABBY

    • Oh, OK, Fabby…I get ya now! You ARE like me, then! I have some things stashed all nice and neat and pretty in pretty furniture, and then all the other things….they are stored very neatly and in a very organized fashion, but they are in practically every room!!! I even bought some of those underbed storage containers on wheels to store placemats under the bed in the guest room!!! The other guest room has been turned into a storage room, and we built a storage area onto our house right off my dressing room when it became apparent the other storage space downstairs was insufficient!!!     I’ve been to Home Goods several times during the summer, but hardly bought anything, didn’t care for the summer stuff. Now Halloween things are all over, but I don’t care for those witches, etc. either. Saves money tho!! 😉

I, too, would like to resist the approaching Fall, since I’m definitely a summer person, but, the climate is conspiring against me. It’s definitely getting darker earlier in the day, and I don’t hear the birds singing as much in the mornings . . . I’m glad you are making the most of the summer we have left!

  42. I love this tablescape. I like the “summer adjacent” idea since I, too, am pushing Fall back as far as I can.

    Your settings are just gorgeous. I think I need those chargers to go under my “yacht” china; the roped edging is perfect. I really like those glass cylinders and the beautiful orchids. Adding your fantastic lamp shades really adds a nice touch. It’s so decadent to add that touch; I love it!!

  46. I always LOVE your tables! Working with these “thin” tables is no easy task and you do it wonderfully! I “steal” (borrow lol) ideas all the time!
    This is breath taking, I have to get some of these tall vases!!! So exciting Alycia!!!! I am excited with the seasons changing, but I am not sure I am done with this one and ready for the next…..I guess we will see what happens huh?

Those vases can be purchased in varying sizes from places like TJ Maxx, Home Goods/Marshalls and probably Hobby Lobby. Word to the wise: look for the ones with thick glass. The thin glass cannot withstand many designs being placed within or on top! As for the skinny tables, I keep threatening to have some custom-made that are at least 12-15″ wider. Problem is, then none of my floor-length linens would fit and I’d have to spend a ton of money to get new ones! 😦 Always something! Have a good weekend!!!

I am not much for the fall colors, but this is fabulous. I love everything about it and of course the fun setting is perfect for the beginning of fall.

    • Good morning! Thank you!!! I know what you mean about taking awhile to get around. I look at every TT post each week, and it usually takes me 3-4 days depending on how many posts there are. I just like to see what everyone is doing (I read them all & very often leave a comment…that’s what takes so long!) and to really study the photos. It’s fun! Kind of like a free magazine! 🙂 I’m like you…not much on the fall colors. Fall used to be my favorite time of year, but it isn’t so much in recent years. Not sure why. I need to snap out of it!     • I remember reading in your profile that you are a retired floral designer! Uh oh….now I really have to be on my toes! I try to buy only those fauxs that look absolutely real and that truly mirror nature unless they are of an exaggerated nature like the orchid stems in this post. Even then I want them to have a fabulous quality about them. Z Gallerie and Pier 1 are really good with their faux flowers. I generally wait until they go on deep discount, though, because they can be pretty pricey. I miss the days when I was just able to order from any wholesale dealer I wanted.
