Last week I brought you Confectionery Christmas, one of the three “fantasy” tablescapes I set up for “Garlands & Gatherings”, a fundraising brunch benefiting Hope Haven of Cass County, MO. This second table runs in a completely different direction with strong, more traditional colors and the pattern that is very often associated with both the Christmas season AND golf: tartan!

You may or may not know that the game of golf has Scottish origins, and that was the inspiration for this golf-themed Christmas tablescape. Tartan is most particularly associated with Scotland (Rod Stewart anyone? 😉 ) and was therefore a sure bet for bringing color and pattern to this traditional table for four. If you have avid golfers in your family or social circle, a tablescape like this could be right up their alley!
(NOTE: The 48″ table used for this demonstration is considerably smaller than most households’ dining room tables. Your finished creation would be better spaced out.)
Each place setting is grounded by crisscrossed tartan table runners from Tuesday Morning in red, black, green, and white with touches of gold thread. Goldleafed glass chargers separate the runner from the red, gold & white Royal Scotland china. (You can see this same china used for Missouri Show Me State Dinner and Christmas Through the Red Door.)
This was one of my favorite parts of the tablescape: a resin replica of a golf bag from the men’s section in Hobby Lobby used as a vase for a nosegay of red spray roses, green hypericum berries, green Pittosporum, and a tiny branch of privet berries. The bouquet is centered in a miniature grapevine wreath that adds texture to the setting.
Gold-rimmed stemware is a nice complement to the setting, as is gold-toned flatware.
I created menus using our home desktop computer. Black cardstock frames white cardstock embellished with printed tartan ribbon. A 3-D effect is achieved by hot gluing a miniature wreath to the center of the top ribbon.
I wanted so much to recreate a version of the “golf club tripod” centerpiece I did for the dedication of my Dad’s memorial garden reception buffet table, but I was afraid it might not be able to withstand the day’s activities. So…
…I finally threw in the towel and switched from a wobbly trio of 9 irons to a sturdy 3-legged iron stand centered in a snow-kissed faux pine wreath with a smattering of gold mercury glass votives around the perimeter. Same effect with a much-reduced chance of catastrophe. (Safety first!) I topped the iron piece with an oversized red ornament ball and then embellished the body with two greenery/ribbon swags. I made the bows using tartan wire-edged ribbon that complements the table runners, red/gold/green wired ribbon for contrast, and black organza ribbon. The result was a very lush and dramatic centerpiece.
Chairs for this table are dressed in bright red stretch chair covers from LinenTablecloth.com. Notice how I chose to lower the black stretch sash to look more like a “belt” than a “bra” on the chair. Here is also where you can plainly see the contrasting red, black, and white linens used to create a layered look for the table that looks great with the tartan runners.
Finally, a golf club embellished with the same tartan ribbon and greenery used in the centerpiece. A pair of these propped up at the entry of your event or tied into a wreath would look great!

You do know how to solve a problem, i.e. the golf clubs. That is genius as well as a great centerpiece. While a smaller table than you generally prepare, it is full of attention to detail which is one of your trademarks. The tartan is perfect with the clubs or maybe the tartan inspired their use.

Wow, Alycia, this is a stunningly handsome table. I bet the crowd really went crazy on this one. I so love tartan plaid, and like the way you put the masculine touch of belt vs bra, the golf bag vase (super clever), the menus (I know you’re a professional, but they look printer professional). Love it all! I just picked up something from this post. I never use a table runner on our kitchen round table because it just does not look right but using 2 looks great. I love your centerpiece and the use of the gold clubs is so original Love the tartan!

I am in love with the red and gold Royal Scotland china pattern. The colors are perfect with the gold leaf chargers and the tartan plaid table runners to create this golf oriented holiday tablescape. The golf bags with the red roses are a stroke of genius, they are perfect paired up with your wonderfully festive centerpiece.

Great Scot, what a great table! The tartan plaid is perfect for not only Christmas but for a Scottish golf theme! The height of the centerpiece is commanding but so pretty The crisscross table runners are the perfect anchor for each place setting, and those gorgeous dishes!! I’m even loving those chair covers!! Oh, Alycia, be still my heart! From the first photo on, the word that kept coming to mind was ,”Striking!” The contrast of colors against each other is truly stunning. This is just fabulous Alycia! The centerpiece looks like a shiny red golf ball on a tee! I love the criss cross tartan runners, all the rolling ribbons, the clubs, it is all festive and such a perfect celebration of golf! I think the mini wreaths on your menus are simply brilliant! Alycia, you have amazed me once again – always! I don’t know what’s going on with tartan plaids these days, but I’m noticing an explosion of tartan decor. After I started working on my tartan tablescape for this week’s table post, my ears and eyes have awakened to the current craze. I’ve been a plaid lover since childhood, and your “red-wrapped” tartan tablescape makes me feel right at home. I like how you made a matching door decoration to demonstrate making that flow connection with your attendees. The tie-in with golf is perfect, too. Tartan is always wonderful at Christmas, but the golf tees emphasize the theme transition. I enjoy every one of your tables, and this one is tops, too! 🙂

This is so manly man I love it! My soon to be son in law is a golf fanatic and he would really like this. I have to scoot to Hobby Lobby and see if I can find that golf bag vase. He could use it on his desk to hold pens, pencils and candy. Bro-man has a large sweet tooth!

This is one gorgeous table, Alycia! There is something so warm and welcoming about a tartan table, it is hard to describe. I keep looking at every little detail from the table and chair linens, to the china, which is lovely, to the awesome centerpiece, to those cute little golf bag vases.

I love, love this table and that fabulous invitation!…you always coordinate the invitation with the theme of the table so beautifully….If I were in that room, that would be the table I would be drawn to…a table that any woman or man would love to enjoy their meal at….and linger on as the table has such warmth and coziness that who would want to get up and leave!..the centerpiece is so creative and I also love, love the golf tripod centerpiece you made for your dad’s memorial garden buffet…..Hope you are taking a well deserved rest!!
